While visiting some friends in Palm Beach, Florida the winter of 1998, Hal Petit asked "Walter, how would you like to add Mike Douglas to your Tablecloth while you're here?"
Since I left the Tablecloth in St. Louis, I remembered carrying one of matching napkins with me for such emergencies. "Hal, that would be great, go ahead and line that up."
Mike was a full hour late for our appointment to meet at Lost Tree Country Club January 9, 1998. He apologized as they took a little longer at the car dealer when picking up his new Mercedes that morning. We were ushered to the men's locker room for the signing. We found a table and chairs in the midst of the lockers which included the one for Jack Nicklaus.
Mike was dressed in a sports shirt and jacket as he was meeting his wife for lunch in the dinning room. He really looked great and full of vigor as I always remember him on his variety talk show for 21 years between 1961 and 1982.
I explained about the napkin and that didn't bother him a bit. We found a man nearby to take the pictures for us as Mike signed the napkin. He really enjoyed the collection and especially the album books I carried along. He had a story about each celebrity as he turned each page. A wonderful visit with Mike Douglas that day at Lost Tree.
