CAROL CHANNING
Singer - Dancer - Actress - Performer
Born January 31, 1921 - Seattle, Washington
Carol was the first woman I added to The Tablecloth collection in the winter 1983. I had made one of my super fancy Horseshoes and presented it to her in 1980. There was a striking likeness of her head and face with an exotic hairdo, lots of colorful makeup, comedy/tragedy ceramic piece and a ribbon across the front, GOOD LUCK CAROL CHANNING. She mailed me the nicest "Thank You" note I still keep.
Three years later I started The Tablecloth collection. I met with her along with her personal manager on the floor of the old Sports Arena on Oakland boulevard in St. Louis on a very cold day in 83. She was quite pleasant and signed a very nice signature. I failed to carry a camera with me that day.
Again I have to say, her accumulation of credits and awards are much to numerous to try to list here. May I recommend going to her Website. That is quite special to see.
Her two biggies are, of course, Gentlemen Prefer Blonds from which came the song Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend. Then there was Hello Dolly of which came another tremendous hit of the same name. Imagine that?
Carol Channing is another one of those Super performers I'm sure everyone has seen at least twice and remembers forever. Probably one of the most recognized stars around the globe. She spans sixty years of entertainment as a one of a kind performer and considered one of America's biggest Stars.
Ten years after she signed the cloth, Carol appeared at the Convention Center in St. Louis in the Working Women's Show, February 18, 1994.
This time I carried my trusty Minolta camera along to try to get that picture with her for the Gallery. She was quite pleased to see how pretty her signature had been embroidered on The Tablecloth. She looked just great and still full of high energy and enthusiasm. I was pleased that she remembered me, The Tablecloth and also the Horseshoe I had made for her. We did a little small talk, took four or five pictures with the cloth, one of which you are looking at, embraced , shook hands, and said our goodbye's.
The talent and sparkle of Carol Channing goes unmatched and will most likely not be seen again. "Way to go Carol, keep it going Baby." Legend-For sure.
